medical expertise with the latest technology – spotlight on dr lee hung ming

Just over two months ago, in May 2007, Dr Lee had great success performing the First Bladeless Cornea Transplant in Asia at the Parkway Eye centre. Dr Lee is currently using one of the first cornea cutting machines (the IntraLase® Laser machine) in Asia that has a software that allows it to cut the cornea in any shape desired.

This machine’s ability to cut precise shapes, depending on the problem with the patient’s cornea, leads to quicker healing. The smoother cut from this machine means less astigmatism or blurriness after the transplant. Patients will also be able to see well in a month’s time, much earlier than the 3 to 6 months with more conventional tools.

Dr Lee believes that using the latest equipment in eye surgery is important for both the surgeon and most importantly the patient. He quoted that Ophthalmology equipment is changing all the time, the newer ones are usually better for the patients.

Speaking about cornea transplants, Dr Lee has already done three cornea transplants since he joined Parkway Eye Centre, for a Singaporean, a Malaysian and a Vietnamese respectively. Dr Lee has recently returned from a promotion-cum-teaching trip to Hanoi in June 2007, and had the opportunity to give new sight to a 79-year old Vietnamese lady. He is currently working with Vietnamese doctors, on how to provide follow-up care in Vietnam, after patients undergo their cornea transplant surgery in Singapore.

Prior to his current appointment at Parkway Health Group, Dr Lee was formerly the Head of LASIK surgery in 2 of Singapore’s premier hospitals – Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and National University Hospital (NUH). Dr Lee made a mid-career switch from public to private service recently in May 2007 and he quipped it as a ‘A mid-life crisis’ decision.

As one of only 3 Asian surgeons who sits on the 10-member-Global Advisory Board for Refractive Surgery, Bausch & Lomb, Dr Lee has achieved many ‘Firsts’ in LASIK surgery:

• First surgeon in the world to perform Wavefront LASIK using Iris-recognition technology in 2004.
• He led the medical teams that performed the first Wavefront-guided LASIK in China (2002) as well as in Taiwan (2003).
• First in Singapore to perform the All-Laser, No Blade LASIK in 2004
• First in Singapore to implant a lens implant into the eye to treat severe myopia in 2004
• First in Singapore to insert an implantable contact lens to cure severe myopia in 2005
• First in Asia to perform bladeless Cornea transplant using IntraLase in May 2007 at Parkway Eye Centre (a facility of Gleneagles Hospital).

Dr Lee is also Singapore’s ‘Everest ‘LASIK surgeon – having performed LASIK for Mr Khoo Swee Chiow, as well as the Singapore Women Everest Team members who will be climbing Mt Everest in 2008.

One of the most sought-after speakers in many international and regional eye meetings, Dr Lee was awarded the ACE award, the highest educator award for training Asia-Pacific Surgeons in cataract and refractive surgery, by the Asia-Pacific Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery in 1994
Unknown to many, he decided to be an eye doctor after losing his grandmother to eye disease and blindness. His perseverance and determination led him to be one of today's most eminent eye surgeons in the world.

Born in Kelantan, Malaysia, Dr Lee was the state badminton player for Kelantan. Educated in Singapore as an ASEAN Scholar, he was a versatile sportsman who played 6 sports for NUS Medical Faculty and captained the NUS Badminton Team.

Apparently, he spent all his time either on a badminton court or courting his wife - Dr Janet Lee. They are now happily married with 4 children.

Dr Lee Hung Ming was also the president of the student union in King Edward VII Hall in NUS and was awarded the “Mr KE VIIian” award for an all-round achievement in leadership and sports.

A search through forum pages discussing Lasik operations in Singapore, would yield generous and positive feedback that attests to Dr Lee’s skill, professional care, concern and friendliness as an eye surgeon.

We, at Sensori Holding, congratulate and wish Dr Lee, the very best in his newly appointed position at Parkway Eye Centre!
